Tip Jar
Work out the tip, add coins to reach exactly that amount, then press Done. Eight rounds.
How to play Tip Jar
Each round shows a restaurant bill and a tip percentage, such as 20% on $60.00. Work out the tip, then press the coin buttons ($5, $1, 25¢, 10¢, 5¢) to fill the jar with exactly that amount and press Done. The jar fills as you add coins and turns red if you go over.
The math behind it
Tip = bill × percent ÷ 100. A 20% tip on $60 is $12. A quick way to find 15% is to find 10% (move the decimal) and add half of it: on $60, 10% is $6, half is $3, so 15% is $9. For 20%, double the 10% figure. For 25%, take a quarter of the bill.
Tipping in the US
In the US a tip of 15% to 20% is normal for table service, and many people use 18% to 25% now. Check the receipt first, because some restaurants add a service charge to large groups. The tip calculator splits a bill between people and rounds the total for you.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is typical for table service, and 20% or more for good service.
How do I calculate a 20% tip fast?
Move the decimal one place to get 10%, then double it. On $45, 10% is $4.50, so 20% is $9.
Should I tip on the bill before or after tax?
Most people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but tipping on the total is also common and is not wrong.
