How does the Tip Calculator work?
A tip is an extra payment for service, usually a percentage of the bill. The formula is Tip = Bill × tip% / 100, and the total is Bill + Tip.
To split the bill, divide the total by the number of people. For example, an $85 bill with an 18% tip is $85 + $15.30 = $100.30, or $50.15 each for two people. Many Americans tip on the pre-tax amount.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a 20% tip?
Move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then double it. On a $45 bill, 10% is $4.50, so a 20% tip is $9.00 and the total is $54.00.
How do I split a bill with tip?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. A $120 bill with a 20% tip is $144, so four people pay $36 each.
How much should I tip in the US?
At sit-down restaurants, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is standard, and 18% to 20% is common for good service.
Should I tip on the tax?
Etiquette guides usually suggest tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, but tipping on the total is fine.
