How does the Auto Loan Calculator work?
An auto loan is an installment loan used to buy a car, repaid in fixed monthly payments of principal and interest over a set term.
Amount financed = (price − trade-in) × (1 + sales tax) + fees − down payment. Most states tax only the price after the trade-in credit.
The monthly payment uses the standard amortization formula at your APR and term.
For example, a $35,000 car with $4,000 down, $600 in fees, 6.5% sales tax and a 7% APR over 60 months finances about $33,875 and costs about $671 per month. Actual tax treatment and fees vary by state and dealer.

Frequently asked questions
Is a 72- or 84-month loan a good idea?
Longer terms lower the payment but add interest, and you may owe more than the car is worth for years. Shorter terms cost less overall.
What is a good auto loan rate?
Rates depend on credit score and whether the car is new or used. Compare offers from credit unions, banks and the dealer.
What is the monthly payment on a $35,000 car loan?
About $693 a month for 60 months at 7% APR, with about $6,600 in total interest, before tax, fees or a down payment.
Should I get preapproved before going to the dealer?
Yes. A preapproval from a bank or credit union shows the rate you qualify for, so you can tell whether the dealer's financing offer is better.
