How does the EV vs Gas Cost Calculator work?
An EV vs gas comparison is a look at what it costs to power each car for the same miles, using electricity for the EV and gasoline for the gas car.
Gas car cost = miles ÷ MPG × gas price. EV cost = miles ÷ efficiency (miles per kWh) × electricity price ÷ charging efficiency (about 90% for home Level 2).
Typical EVs get 3 to 4 miles per kWh. Public DC fast charging often costs 40 to 60 cents per kWh, much more than charging at home.
For example, at 13,500 miles a year, $3.10 gas, 30 MPG, 3.5 miles per kWh and 17.5 cents per kWh, fuel costs about $1,395 for the gas car and home charging about $750 for the EV. The estimated $645 difference covers energy only, not vehicle price, insurance or maintenance.

Frequently asked questions
What is the average US electricity price?
Average residential electricity is around 17 to 18 cents per kWh. It varies from about 11 cents in some states to over 30 cents in California and Hawaii.
What about maintenance?
EVs usually cost less to maintain, with no oil changes and less brake wear, but tires can wear faster. This calculator compares energy costs only.
How much does it cost to charge an EV at home?
About $750 a year for 13,500 miles at 3.5 miles per kWh and 17.5 cents per kWh, or about 5.6 cents a mile, including 10% charging losses.
Is there still a federal EV tax credit?
No. The federal clean vehicle credits ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. Some states and utilities still offer rebates.
