How does the Sales Tax Calculator work?
Sales tax is a percentage added to the price of goods, and some services, at checkout. Total = price × (1 + rate). To remove tax from a total, divide by (1 + rate).
US sales tax is set by states, counties and cities. Combined rates range from 0% in states such as Oregon and Delaware to over 10% in some cities. Enter your combined local rate.
For example, adding 8% tax to a $100 item gives $8 in tax and a $108 total. If $108 is the receipt total instead, dividing by 1.08 gives the $100 pre-tax price.

Frequently asked questions
Which states have no sales tax?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax, though some Alaska localities charge one.
Can I deduct sales tax on my federal return?
If you itemize, you can deduct state and local sales tax instead of state income tax, within the SALT cap.
How do I calculate sales tax backwards from a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. A $108 receipt at 8% tax is $108 ÷ 1.08 = $100 before tax, so the tax was $8.
Which state has the highest statewide sales tax?
California, at 7.25% statewide. Local add-ons push combined rates in some US cities above 10%.
