Catch final price under $50

How to play Sale Catcher

Price tags such as $80 -25% fall down three lanes. Move the basket by tapping a lane, or with the left and right arrow keys. Catch a tag when its price after the discount is under $50, and let the rest fall past. Catching a bad deal costs one of your three lives.

The math behind it

A sale price is the original price times one minus the discount: price × (1 − discount). An $80 item at 25% off costs 80 × 0.75 = $60, so it is not a catch. A $60 item at 40% off costs 60 × 0.60 = $36, which is.

A shortcut is to take off the discount a step at a time. 25% off is a quarter off, so take away 80 ÷ 4 = 20. 50% off is half, and 10% off is one tenth.

Why it matters when shopping

Stores often show the percent off rather than the final price, and a big percent on a high price can still cost more than a small percent on a low one. Work out the final price before you decide. The discount calculator does the exact math, including stacked discounts and sales tax.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out a price after a discount?

Multiply the price by one minus the discount. For 30% off $80, that is 80 × 0.70 = $56.

Is 50% off always cheaper than 25% off?

Not across different items. Compare final prices, since a 25% discount on a cheap item can beat 50% off an expensive one only if the final price is lower.

Do I move with the keyboard or the mouse?

Either. Click or tap a lane, or use the left and right arrow keys.

Is Sale Catcher free?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no sign-up.
