How does the Time and a Half Calculator work?
Time and a half means 1.5 times your regular hourly rate. At $20 an hour the overtime rate is $30. Gross pay = regular hours × rate + overtime hours × rate × multiplier.
Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, most non-exempt US workers earn at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours past 40 in a workweek. Some states and employers add daily or holiday overtime.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate time and a half?
Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5. At $20 an hour, time and a half is $30 an hour.
What is double time?
Double time pays twice your regular rate. California requires it after 12 hours in a day, and some employers pay it on holidays.
Do salaried workers get overtime?
Only if they earn under the federal exempt salary threshold or do non-exempt work. Many salaried employees are exempt.
Does time and a half apply to weekends or holidays?
Federal law only requires it for hours over 40 a week. Weekend and holiday premiums come from employer policy, union contracts or some state laws.
