How does the Dividend Calculator work?
Annual dividend income = shares × annual dividend per share. Dividend yield = annual dividend per share / share price × 100. 100 shares paying $2.40 a year earn $240, a 4.8% yield on a $50 stock.
Most US stocks pay quarterly, so each payment is one quarter of the annual figure. Dividends are not guaranteed, and qualified dividends are taxed at long-term capital gains rates.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate dividend yield?
Divide the annual dividend per share by the current share price. $2.40 on a $50 share is 4.8%.
How many shares do I need for $1,000 a month?
$12,000 a year divided by the annual dividend per share. At $2.40 a share, you need 5,000 shares.
Are dividends taxed?
Yes. Qualified dividends are taxed at 0%, 15% or 20% depending on income, and ordinary dividends are taxed as regular income.
What is a good dividend yield?
Many income investors look for 2% to 5%. A very high yield can signal that the share price has fallen or the payout may be cut.
