How does the ROI Calculator work?

Return on investment (ROI) is the gain or loss on an investment as a percentage of what you put in. The formula is ROI = (final value − amount invested) / amount invested × 100.

The annualized return is (final / initial)^(1 / years) − 1, the steady yearly rate that gives the same result. For example, $1,000 growing to $1,350 in 3 years is a 35% ROI, or about 10.5% a year.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate ROI?

Subtract the cost from the final value, divide by the cost, and multiply by 100. If you invest $2,000 and it grows to $2,500, ROI = (2,500 − 2,000) / 2,000 = 25%.

What is a good ROI?

It depends on risk and time, but the S&P 500 has averaged roughly 10% a year before inflation over the long run. An ROI far above that usually comes with higher risk.

Can ROI be negative?

Yes. A negative ROI means you lost money. If you invest $1,000 and it falls to $800, ROI = (800 − 1,000) / 1,000 = −20%.

Why use the annualized return?

It lets you compare investments held for different lengths of time on a per-year basis.
