If you earn $25 an hour and work full time, your gross pay is about $52,000 a year before taxes. Here is how that number is built and how to adjust it for your own schedule.
The 2,080-hour rule
A full-time year is usually counted as 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, which is 2,080 hours. Multiply your hourly rate by 2,080: $25 × 2,080 = $52,000.
$25 an hour by pay period
- Weekly: $1,000
- Biweekly (26 checks): $2,000
- Semimonthly (24 checks): about $2,166.67
- Monthly: about $4,333.33
These are gross amounts, before income tax, Social Security, Medicare and benefits.
When the math changes
If you take two weeks of unpaid time off, you work 50 weeks, or 2,000 hours, and the yearly figure becomes $50,000. Part-time at 30 hours a week gives 1,560 hours and $39,000. Overtime hours at time and a half, $37.50 an hour in this case, raise the total for every hour past 40 in a week.
Comparing an hourly job to a salary
A salaried offer often includes paid holidays and vacation, while an hourly job may not. To compare fairly, divide the salary by the hours you would actually work, or add the value of paid leave and benefits to the hourly side.
