How does the Average Calculator work?
An average (arithmetic mean) is the sum of a set of values divided by how many values there are. The formula is mean = (x1 + x2 + ... + xn) / n.
For example, the mean of 4, 8, 15, 16 and 23 is 66 / 5 = 13.2. Leave a box empty to skip it. The calculator also shows the sum and the smallest and largest values.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate an average?
Add all the numbers and divide by how many there are. For test scores of 85, 90 and 95, the average is 270 / 3 = 90.
What is a weighted average?
A weighted average multiplies each value by its weight before dividing by the total weight. Grades of 90 (weight 3) and 80 (weight 1) average (270 + 80) / 4 = 87.5.
What is the mode?
The mode is the value that appears most often in a data set. In 2, 3, 3, 5 and 7, the mode is 3. A set can have no mode or more than one.
What is the difference between mean and median?
The mean is the arithmetic average. The median is the middle value once the numbers are sorted, so outliers affect it less.
