How does the Army Height and Weight Calculator work?
This calculator is an approximate estimate, not an official Army screening result. Army body-composition rules can change, so verify the current standard with your unit before relying on it.
The BMI threshold in this site's approximation is 27.5 for males and 25.5 for females. The calculator multiplies it by an age factor of 1.00 under age 21, 1.02 at ages 21-27, 1.05 at ages 28-39 and 1.08 at age 40 or older. These are internal estimate assumptions, not age adjustments verified against AR 600-9.
For example, at age 28 the male threshold becomes 27.5 × 1.05 = 28.875, a 5% increase. At 5 ft 9 in, the formula produces about 195.5 lb, displayed as 196 lb. That number is calculated from this BMI approximation, not read from an Army height/weight table, so it cannot be validated against AR 600-9 as a table value.
The result is only a way to inspect this site's rough formula. It does not determine eligibility, readiness or a pass/fail outcome, and it does not calculate body fat or perform a tape test. Confirm current requirements with your unit and the current official Army publication.
Frequently asked questions
Does exceeding the weight table mean I fail?
This calculator is not an Army table and cannot determine a pass or fail. Ask your unit to apply the current official standard.
Is this the official 2026 Army standard?
No, it's a planning estimate from approximate screening weights. Use your unit's current AR 600-9 table for the record standard.
Does age affect the Army weight standard?
This estimate applies its own age factors of 1.00, 1.02, 1.05 and 1.08 by age band. They are not verified Army policy.
What is the next step if I exceed the screening weight?
A trained evaluator uses circumference measurements (tape test) to estimate body fat percentage against the actual standard.
