How does the Savings Bond Calculator work?

US savings bonds earn interest that compounds semiannually. Value = purchase price × (1 + annual rate / 2)^(years held × 2).

EE bonds earn a fixed rate for up to 30 years and are guaranteed to double by 20 years. I bonds combine a fixed rate with an inflation-adjusted rate that resets every 6 months; enter the current combined rate for an estimate.

For the exact value of a specific bond, use the Treasury's own Savings Bond Calculator at treasurydirect.gov, which has the full historical rate schedule.

For example, a $100 bond at a 4% combined rate held for 10 years is worth about $148.59, which is $48.59 of earned interest.

Frequently asked questions

How is savings bond interest compounded?

Semiannually. Every six months, earned interest is added to the bond's value and starts earning interest itself.

Do EE bonds double in value?

The Treasury guarantees an EE bond reaches double its purchase price by its 20-year original maturity, even if that requires a one-time adjustment.

Is this calculator exact?

No. I bond rates change every 6 months and this uses one flat rate for the whole period, so treasurydirect.gov is the source of record.

What is the difference between an EE bond and an I bond?

EE bonds pay a fixed rate for the life of the bond. I bonds combine a fixed rate with a variable rate that tracks inflation, reset every 6 months.

Can I use this as an EE bond calculator or an I bond calculator?

Yes, it works for both: just enter the bond's own rate. It gives the same savings bond value whether you're tracking an EE bond or an I bond.
