How does the RMD Calculator work?

RMD = prior year-end account balance ÷ the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table factor for your age this year. The table factor falls each year, so the required percentage withdrawn rises with age.

RMDs generally start at age 73 (SECURE 2.0). Roth IRAs are exempt from RMDs for the original owner; traditional IRAs, 401(k)s and similar accounts are not.

For example, a $500,000 balance at age 75 uses a table factor of 24.6, for a required distribution of about $20,325, leaving $479,675 in the account.

Frequently asked questions

At what age do RMDs start?

Age 73 under current law (SECURE 2.0), rising to 75 for those born in 1960 or later.

How is my RMD calculated?

Divide your prior December 31 account balance by the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table factor for your age in the distribution year.

What happens if I miss my RMD?

The IRS can charge a 25% excise tax on the amount not withdrawn, reduced to 10% if corrected promptly.

Do Roth IRAs require RMDs?

Not for the original owner during their lifetime, unlike traditional IRAs and most 401(k) plans.
